India vs England, 4th Test, Day 3: As it happened

first_imgWelcome to our coverage of the third day of the fourth Test between India and England in Mumbai. (LIVE SCORECARD | BALL-BY-BALL UPDATES)16.40 IST: Murali Vijay: Pressure was huge, and again I backed my ability. I went back home, worked on my basics, and came strong today. I was getting out to short-pitched deliveries and there was a lot of talk about it. I was confident, and came out with an open mind. The basic thing was I did not think too much about the short balls. We had some momentum with us, the way Virat started was fantastic and the way he ended was even more amazing. The pitch has a lot of assistance for the spinners, hopefully our bowlers can get more. Always great to bat with Pujara and Virat. At Stumps on Day 3 of the 4th Test, #TeamIndia are 451/7, lead #ENG(400) by 51 runs (Virat 147*, Jayant 30* ) #INDvENG pic.twitter.com/DLnLRWCm2I BCCI (@BCCI) December 10, 201616.34 IST: STUMPS! An eventful day for India comes to an end. With two centurions leading from the front it was just about keeping up the momentum. After loosing Pujara just on the second ball of the day, Kohli and Vijay comfortably sailed over the first session with some quick-run scoring. India 451/7 at stumps, lead England (400) by 51 runsThe English bowlers will be disappointed as they could not bundled the Indians out in the final session where they could only get a single wicket. Again a bad day for England with the ball as they failed to capitalise on their chances. Jayant Yadav proved his point by sticking on with Kohli to take them through the day with just 7 wickets down. Kohli was sublime all through the day and looks like he has a plan to take the game away from the Englishmen.advertisement16.21 IST: Down the leg side, Jayant Yadav tries to clip it but fails to hit it. A huge appeal by the fielders and the umpire denies. They ask for a review but they have none left. Replays suggest there was a faint edge.16.06 IST: FOUR! Pitched outside off, Jayant Yadav goes for a hit and finds his inside edge flying behind the stumps for a boundary through fine leg.15.52 IST: NOT OUT! England go for a review as Jayant is not given out caught behind. The visitors are fairly confident though. Pitched up and outside off, Jayant Yadav goes to hit it but misses the ball. Bairstow appeals and the umpire denies. They have gone in for a review. The Ultra Edge shows that there was nothing hitting the bat. They have used up all the reviews now. India 411/7, lead England (400) by 11 runs15.45 IST: DROPPED! Root drops Jayant on 8. Pitched outside off and moving outside, Jayant goes to play for it and the ball takes the outside edge in process. A simple catch towards the left of Root is not gathered properly.Wankhede celebrates as @imVkohli brings up his 15th Test ton. Well played, Virat Kohli! Fuller outside off, Kohli drives it through covers for a single. There was a fumble at covers and that allowed the run. He takes his helmet off and celebrates his ton. He has played an absolute gem here. He actually celebrated it well, with a leap, a pump of the fist. India 370/7, trail England (400) by 30 runsAP Photo14.51 IST: WICKET! Jadeja departs for 25. Jadeja runs out of patience. Rashid floats it on off, Jadeja again looks to play the big shot. The bat seems to have turned in his hands. It skies in the air, Buttler comes across from mid off, goes to his left and takes the catch safely. Replays show there was a puff of dust when the ball landed. India 364/7, trail England (400) by 36 runsVirat Kohli 500 runs in this series, 2nd time in his career (692 in Aus 2014/15)Sachin Tendulkar 500+ in a series: never!#IndvEng Mohandas Menon (@mohanstatsman) December 10, 201614.35 IST: FOUR! Hit away! Shorter outside leg, Kohli picks it early, rocks back and pulls it through mid-wicket for a boundary. Superb placement, that.14.12 IST: TEA! India 348/6, trail England (400) by 52 runs. An eventful session of Test cricket. The honours are probably even, with India still trailing by 52 runs. England struck at regular intervals in the session as the spinners finally found their lines and lengths to induce the false strokes. The stand between the Indian skipper, who has looked solid, and Jadeja though eased the nerves for the hosts.advertisementBoth Kohli and Jadeja played their shots to deflect the pressure back on England. With the pitch breaking up, every run matters and hence the visitors will hope to wrap this up quickly and get batting. India will aim to delay it as much possible and try and sneak in a lead. It promises to be another exciting session.13.59 IST: FOUR! Pitched short by Moeen Ali, Jadeja camps back and punches it down the track towards mid on for a boundary. India 344/6, trail England (400) by 56 runs13.43 IST: DROPPED! Pitched outside leg, Kohli hits hard straight to the bowler and Rashid cannot grab that one. Tough catch for Rashid. Kohli dropped on 68. How costly will that be?13.39 IST: WICKET! Root bowls outside leg, Ashwin tries to hit of his pads but he gets his shot straight in the hands of Jennings who was standing at forward short leg. Unlucky Ashwin and a really good catch by Jennings. Ashwin waited for the third umpire decision but that was a clear catch and the ball was no where near the helmet. India 307/6, trail England (400) by 93 runs13.29 IST: WICKET! Parthiv Patel departs. Joe Root bowls outside off on a good length and Parthiv tries to go inside out over the cover region. In process he gets an outside edge which goes behind the stumps. The ball hits Bairstow’s shoulder and goes up in the air for an easy catch for him in the second chance. Good review from England. Floated on middle and leg, Karun comes forward to defend but is hit on his pads. The players go up in an appeal but the umpire says no. Ali comes across to have a chat with Bairstow who is not sure why it is not given out. Cook confers, is convinced and goes for the review. Replays show the bat was very close to the pad, there is a doubt over deflection. The bat actually hit the pad and also the ball and hence there are a couple of spikes which caused the delay. The umpire concludes there is no bat there and three reds follow. Karun Nair again has to go for a low score. Moeen Ali has another wicket. India 279/4, trail England (400) by 121 runs12.44 IST: FOUR! Innovation from Karun! Floated outside off, Karun premeditates it early and reverse sweeps it through third man for a boundary off Moeen Ali. Floated outside off, Vijay looks to go down the ground but does not get to the pitch of the ball. He ends up hitting the low full toss back to the bowler. Rashid fumbles a touch and the ball almost pops out but he holds onto it. Vijay cannot believe his luck but he has to go. End of a fine knock by the Indian opener. India 262/3, trail England (400) by 138 runsadvertisement12.19 IST: Vijay slammed his second century of the series. Murali Vijay and Virat Kohli stride out to bat.Well played #MuraliVijay???Gr8 balance, amazing timer of the ball & pleasing 2 the eye???Love watching him bat??? #INDvENG @BCCI VVS Laxman (@VVSLaxman281) December 10, 201611.32 IST: LUNCH! India 247/2, trail England (400) by 153 runs. Vijay 124*, Virat Kohli 44*. Now that was an interesting session of Test cricket and India have won their second session in a row. Jake Ball struck with the second ball of the day, dismissing Cheteshwar Pujara but that was all that went in the favour of the visitors as both Vijay and Kohli held fort for the hosts with a fine century stand. Both of them have been keen on using their feet well to the spinners.Vijay got to his ton and looked a bit rusty looking to get going with the game. He survived a scare when he was given out lbw to Rashid but the inside edge saved him, albeit a review. India scored 101 runs in the session but will know with the trail still 153, they are a long way off from getting on top in this game.England will rue the indiscipline of their spinners. There were patches of brilliance followed by the customary bad balls. It was about this time that the visitors had collapsed a touch and will want to inflict something similar on India. They are still not out of it but need an inspirational spell to stay on top in this game. Do join us for the second session in a while.11.22 IST: NOT OUT! DECISION OVERTURNED. Bowled on the stumps, Vijay stretches forward trying to defend it and the umpire gives it out. The reviews show that bat was hit first. That seems to be a clear inside edge which the umpire missed and he has to reverse his decision. The bat and pad were really close. Vijay was quick to ask for a review and his confidence paves out. Murali Vijay and Virat Kohli have put on a fifty stand for the third wicket. India 197/2 (64.4 overs), trail England (400) by 203 runs10.10 IST: FOUR! SUBLIME! Stokes bowls it full outside off, Vijay presses forward and unfurls a glorious drive through extra cover for a majestic boundary. A shot a cricket lover can make love to. Beautiful, just too good. India 189/2 (62.5 overs), trail England (400) by 211 runs09.51 IST: SIX! Vijay finally makes it. Floated outside off, Vijay this time dances down the wicket and lofts it over the bowler’s head for a maximum. Vijay held his bat very straight, but India are not shutting shop. India 166/2 (57.1 overs), trail England (400) by 234 runs09.48 IST: FOUR! Kohli playing with fire! Shorter outside off, Kohli rides the bounce and guides it past the gully fielder for a boundary. Cook won’t mind the shot, Kohli won’t mind the runs.09.45 IST: FOUR! Risky but needed? Shorter length outside off, Kohli waits for it and guides it with an open face through the gully region for a boundary.09.38 IST: FOUR! Kohli off the mark. Shorter outside off, Kohli rides the bounce and guides it past the diving fielder at point for a boundary. He did well to get on top of that one. India trail by 250 runsReuters Photo09.32 IST: WICKET! Cheteshwar Pujara misses out on fifty. The move to open with Jake Ball today works. Angled on a length outside off, comes in sharply, Pujara lets it go but the ball wasn’t even bouncing and he has his off stump pegged back. That’s a poor leave but a brilliant start for England and Ball is delighted. Pujara has gone after a start. Replays show that the ball did brush the pads on the way to the stumps. India 146/2 (52.2 overs), trail England (400) by 254 runs09.28 IST: Game time! The players are out in the middle. Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara are out to bat.09.26 IST: PITCH REPORT – Sunil Gavaskar reckons that the pitch has not broken up yet. There are a few cracks which were bothering but they have held up well. The odd ball has spun a lot off the crack. The flatter trajectory has not allowed the ball to spin. Opines that Rashid can make a difference with Moeen keeping the ends tight. Mentions that the pitch will break up sooner than later given the history of the deck. Ends by saying that India will want to get as close to the England total as possible. Nasser Hussain admits that the England spinners were inconsistent and need to be a bit more disciplined and not let India run away with the game.Brief Day 2 Report: India’s batsmen made a strong start in their reply to England’s 400 all out on day two of the fourth Test, reaching 146 for the loss of just one wicket by the close.Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara put on 107 runs for the second wicket as batsmen enjoyed an easy, slow-turning wicket at the Wankhede Stadium that offered no hope to seamers and some assistance to spinners.England’s spinners were not able to control the ball as well as their Indian counterparts did. India’s spinners took all 10 English first innings wickets. At stumps, Vijay was unbeaten on 70 runs, while Pujara was batting on 47 not out. The hosts trail by 254 runs. The duo had come together just before tea when Lokesh Rahul (24) was bowled by Moeen Ali (1/44). Pujara and Vijay then added 84 runs after the break in a wicketless session for England. (Read Full Report)last_img
