VAN NUYS – A 25-year-old construction worker was hospitalized in critical condition Wednesday after he was trapped under hundreds of pounds of moist soil from a collapsed excavation trench, officials said. The worker was standing in a trench for a new sewer line when the walls collapsed, trapping him with only his head and one shoulder exposed, Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said. Dozens of firefighters and rescue team members responded to the 9:55 a.m. incident in the 5300 block of Woodman Avenue, where a two-story home was under construction.
