(file photo)Energy Minister Rayburn Blackmoore is describing as historic, a ground breaking ceremony in Laudat, to mark the start of a geothermal energy project for Dominica later today.Government is of the view that the development of Dominica’s geothermal energy will give the island a more reliable and affordable source of energy thereby reducing its dependency on crude oil from other countries. The long-term plan is to build a one hundred and twenty megawatt power plant which will have the capacity to provide energy to neighbouring countries of Guadeloupe and Martinique.Blackmoore who was speaking ahead of today’s ground breaking ceremony said that Dominica has the potential for exploration of geothermal energy.“What is going to take place is something historic for us in Dominica. You may recall that in April government signed a contract with the government of Iceland for the drilling of three test wells and we know that we have the potential in geothermal and if we get it right, this is the greatest legacy that we can leave for the people of Dominica,” he explained.According to Mr Blackmoore, Dominica has also placed emphasis on the country’s local demand and will construct a power plant to supply this demand.“What this means is that once we are able to reduce energy cost and electric power, individual households will be at ease, it will also encourage business investment and add a new contributor to the national gross product,” he said. The official ground breaking ceremony is carded for 3:30 p.m at Laudat.Dominica Vibes Newslast_img
