  • Coetzee feeling undermined as Boks coach

first_imgAfter only 11 victories in 25 Tests during two years guiding the Springboks, there has been media speculation that the 54-year-old faced the sack.  But the former inter-provincial scrum-half says his efforts to build a team capable of winning the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan are being severely hampered by some officials.Coetzee believes that if he does not quit, he risks being reduced to a “ceremonial coach” reporting to recently appointed national director of rugby Johan “Rassie” Erasmus. In the letter from Coetzee to SA Rugby, leaked to the media, the coach alleges that officials “embarked on a deliberate attempt to undermine me from the word go.”(This) creates a public impression of incompetence on my part while wilfully obstructing my efforts to be successful.”I will fight to protect my hard-earned reputation, which is in the process of being deliberately soiled publicly by elements within SA Rugby.”When Coetzee belatedly succeeded Heyneke Meyer in 2016, he did not have time for pre-season camps and had no say in the selection of support staff.South Africa lost a calendar-year record eight Tests, including at home to Ireland, away to Argentina and to Italy for the first time. The Springboks were also humiliated 57-15 by greatest rivals the New Zealand All Blacks in Durban, a record home loss.Last year, Coetzee got the assistant coaches he wanted after a reshuffle and the team underwent extensive pre-season training, but there was only a slight improvement in performances. South Africa did win seven Tests, but six came against poorly performing France and Argentina, and the other against traditional European minnows Italy.Among four 2017 losses were a 57-0 drubbing in New Zealand, a 38-3 thrashing in Ireland, and a 24-22 loss to a virtual Wales ‘B’ team.A damning statistic is that Coetzee has not won a Test against a team ranked higher in the world. Before becoming national coach, Coetzee developed the Cape Town-based Western Stormers into the consistently most successful of the South African sides in Super Rugby. He then worked with a Japanese club before becoming only the second black coach of the Springboks after Peter de Villiers.”I was the most successful (South African) Super Rugby coach at the time of my (Springboks) appointment and was requested to return from Japan because my country needed me,” the letter read in part.Despite only a 44 percent win rate in charge of a country that lifted the Rugby World Cup in 1995 and 2007 and were third in England three years ago, Coetzee insists he is on the right track.”I am contracted to 2019 … there has been immense progress,” he stressed after the last tour of Europe.Springboks skipper Eben Etzebeth backs his coach: “They (critics of Coetzee) do not always know what they are talking about. I would keep Allister as coach.”last_img read more

  • Reality Check: Is doping a problem in Paralympic sport?

first_imgThe report for 2015 is due out in the next few weeks, so the most recent report we have is the 2014 one.In the year covered by that report, 1,013 tests were conducted for IPC sports (which include athletics, swimming, powerlifting and skiing) in which prohibited substances were found nine times.During the year, sanctions were taken against 11 athletes. If you break that down into the sports involved it is clear that most of the IPC’s anti-doping problems come from the sport of powerlifting, which was the source of seven of the positive tests and eight of the sanctions. The IPC announced in 2014 that it had suspended 13 powerlifters in the previous 14 months. The sport has been targeted with a “Raise the Bar – Say No! to Doping” campaign.Since then, the IPC has also adopted a new anti-doping code, which came into effect on 1 January 2015.Paralympic athletes have the same list of banned substances as Olympic athletes and, like them, anyone who requires additional medication for pain or treatment must apply for an exemption.”It’s a common misconception that a lot of Paralympians will be on prescription drugs. That’s not the case at all,” Nicole Sapstead, UK Anti-Doping chief executive, told the BBC ahead of London 2012.”Obviously there are athletes with spinal injuries and they need pain relief. But mostly it is the same as the Olympics – things like asthma and diabetes.”Only one athlete was given a doping sanction at the Sochi Paralympic Winter Games in 2014, but since then the McLaren Report for the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) found that Russia’s sports ministry manipulated urine samples provided by its athletes between 2011 and 2015.The report identified 27 samples relating to eight Para-sports, five of which are summer sports, including some governed by the IPC.The IPC also found evidence that samples were swapped during the Sochi Winter Paralympics, adding that it planned to reanalyse every Russian sample given at the event. So now the Russian team has been banned from this year’s Paralympic Games in Rio, and the IPC is wondering if it has more of a doping problem than it previously thought.last_img read more

  • Embarba will leave record revenues in the lightning coffers

first_imgFar is that millionaire signing of Leo Baptistao by Atlético in summer of 2013. Then, the rojiblanca entity was with the striker striker for seven million euros. An operation which for a long time remained the highest, above those of Mojica (€ 5M), Jozabed (4, its clause was paid), Diamé (3), Michu (2.5) or Coke (1.8) . Espanyol wanted to reinforce with Embarba in this winter market and has had to scratch his pocket. The blue and white club will pay, in installments, ten million euros (those set out in the extreme clause), record revenues in Vallecas. And is that Lightning had never perceived such economic amount by the departure of one of its players.Embarba’s march will leave ten million in the red-haired coffers, an amount that surpasses the eight deposited by Celta to take over midfielder Fran Beltrán, which did execute its termination clause, and about eight (about seven fixed and another in variables) that Betis paid for the signing of the left side Alex Morenolast_img read more

  • Quique Setién, against the real fire of Valencia in Mestalla

first_imgEleven days and two games have passed since Quique Setién took over Barcelona. Little room to assess the changes that the new technician who has so far made his first two duels against the minimum against clearly inferior rivals such as Granada in the Camp Nou and Ibiza wants to introduce into the team. But now the first curves arrive. This afternoon (Mestalla, 16:00, Movistar LaLiga) awaits Valencia. First real fire exam for the new project. The Celades team was the set of LaLiga Santander that was less worn out during the week in the Cup. With a lineup of substitutes, he controlled Logroñés and went round taking a break after receiving two consecutive unappealable defeats: first against Madrid in the Super Cup and a week ago against Mallorca in Son Moix. After the win in Mallorca, Valencia is still out of European positions and will try to regain ground against Barcelona. Parejo’s loss is the main problem for the locals, who lose their brains and the fundamental footballer in stationary ball actions. On the other hand, they recover Rodrigo, who will be the center of attention due to the interest of Barcelona, who values him very seriously as a winter reinforcement to replace the loss of Luis Suárez.Effectiveness. Without the Uruguayan, Barça continues in search of its dominance of the game in concrete opportunities and be effective. Messi, who rested in the Cup, returns to the team to play against one of his favorite victims next to Griezmann, who scored two providential goals Wednesday in Ibiza. They also return to the Busquets and Piqué team regarding the call for Copa and De Jong, who, being sanctioned, did not play against Granada.Everything indicates that Setién, after testing the three central system in the Cup, will return to 4-3-3 with the only doubt in defense of Umtiti or Lenglet as a pair of Piqué and that of Arthur or Arturo Vidal to complete the average with Busquets and the Dutch.Collado will be on the bench as a novelty, since Riqui Puig did not travel when he was feverish, and the goalkeeper of the Iñaki Peña subsidiary, since Neto will not be able to return to Mestalla due to injury.last_img read more
