  • Know Before You Go: Practice Safety This Winter

first_img“It’s very important to dress in layers to maintain proper body temperature, and to layer your foot protection also with wool socks being the first layer while hiking in the cold to avoid hypothermia,” said Gamber. “The forests can provide stunning scenery and recreational opportunities during the winter, but it is important to be aware of the dangers and risks associated with winter weather,” said Rick Gamber, safety officer with the National Forests in North Carolina. “Snowstorms, freezing temperatures and long exposure to cold winds are all concerns when recreating in the national forests in the winter months.” Frostbite is another injury common to those spending significant time outdoors in the winter months. Frostbite is a progressive injury caused by freezing of the skin and tissue, which causes a loss of feeling in the affected areas. It is important to take steps to avoid frostbite. Visitors should stay warm and dry with many layers and do not expose skin such as the tip of your nose, ears, and fingers to the cold for extended periods of time. Gamber says visitors to the national forests should pay attention to their surroundings and to their capabilities in the woods. People who remain outdoors for an extended period of time such as hikers and hunters are susceptible to hypothermia, a condition where the body experiences abnormally low body temperature which can lead to death. With winter fast approaching, the U.S. Forest Service urges outdoor enthusiasts to ‘Know Before You Go” and follow simple tips to stay safe when visiting the Nantahala, Pisgah, Uwharrie, and Croatan National Forests during the colder months. Severe injuries and fatalities can occur during the winter due to road conditions after a snow or ice storm. Motorists should be aware of icy conditions on shaded areas of roadways. Drivers should use common sense when traveling on Forest Service roads and obey speed limits. Gamber also encourages motorists to have appropriate tires, to not travel alone and carry emergency kits containing items such as water, pre-packaged snack foods, warm clothing, a blanket, and matches. “If you think you or a companion is experiencing frostbite, seek warm shelter and immerse the affected area in room temperature, not hot, water,” said Gamber. “Do not rub the frostbitten area, as this can cause more damage.”Before heading out to enjoy your national forests this winter, “know before you go” and contact the local Ranger District office to get the latest information about current road conditions and seasonal closures.last_img read more

first_imgThe Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has appealed to First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan to lead the African Women Champions, the Super Falcons of Nigeria to the 2015 FIFA Women World Cup to be hosted by Canada.Board member of the NFF and Chairman of the Nigeria Women Football League, Chief (Mrs) Dilichukwu Onyedinma told journalists in Abuja over the weekend that the invitation was a mark of honour for Dame Jonathan whom she added has been a strong pillar for the emancipation of women in the country. In addition, she noted that the team would need her patience and good luck to succeed at the world stage.Onyedinma who also used the occasion to reel out the achievements of female football since her election in 2011 noted that after the initial challenges that confronted her board, they have been able to reposition the Women League with the resultant effect of the discovery of young and talented girls from across the country. She recalled the exploits of Nigerian female footballers in international championships including the National U-17 women team, the Flamingoes who reached the quarter finals of the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Costa Rica earlier in the year with players plying their trade in the Nigerian league.“Apart from the Flamingoes, we also had the National U-20 Women National Team, the Falconets that went to Canada in August and played to the finals of the FIFA U-20 Women World Cup with 99% of the players from our league here in Nigeria, only one player came from a school in the United States,” Dilichukwu explained, adding, “Only last weekend, we took another set of Super Falcons team to Namibia to reclaim the African Women Championship. In the victorious team, only five players came from overseas, the remaining 17 are all from our league clubs here at home”.The female football boss further revealed that the present board has been working hard to ensure that the league clubs had some support especially from the private sector with the commissioning of various marketing agents whom she noted have been working assiduously to attract sponsors with whom there are various negotiations at various stages. Onyedinma further explained that to make the female football more appealing to Nigerians especially the corporate world, her board concluded the incorporation of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) as well as entering a partnership with the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) for live transmission of female league matches starting from the next season.last_img read more
