  • Beaches & Ocean Declared Open for Ocean City’s Summer Season

first_imgParts of the downtown beaches and Boardwalk were already crowded early Friday afternoon. City spokesman Doug Bergen said the holiday weekend traffic began to build on Thursday and continued to be heavy on Friday. As always, good weather is key for drawing visitors to the beaches, Boardwalk and business attractions. Ocean City recovered from a rainy June last year to bask in the glory of a sunny July and August. He had no need for a bathing suit. He simply marched straight into the surf — business suit and all. Muldowney participates in the plunge every year. Gazing at the crowds Friday, she predicted that Ocean City will enjoy another stellar summer season. Eric Axelson was nattily attired in a tan business suit, brown dress shoes and a Hugo Boss shirt. He clutched a black briefcase in his left hand. The Keller Williams real estate agent appeared ready to head back to the office to close some lucrative property deal. But, instead, he was spending Friday afternoon at the Ocean City beach. Axelson was part of the Business Persons Plunge, a wacky tradition held each Memorial Day weekend to kick off what city officials hope will be a busy summer tourism season. “This is my cheapest suit,” Axelson said, laughing at the prospect of getting soaked. The zany publicity event shows just how far the city will go to promote business during the all-important summer season. Early signs are indicating that 2016 will be another strong summer.A few hundred people, including local merchants dressed in formal workplace attire, formed a colorful procession that marched into the ocean for the traditional Business Persons Plunge celebrating the arrival of the summer season.Michele Gillian, executive director of the Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce, said hotel occupancy is up between 2 percent and 5 percent and rental property bookings have increased between 5 percent and 10 percent compared to the same period last year. As hundreds of people watched, Mayor Jay Gillian officially proclaimed the ocean and beaches open for the summer. “We’re passionate about supporting business during the summer season. It’s a good cause,” Axelson said while explaining the reason for taking part in the plunge. The weather forecast calls for sunny skies and balmy temperatures Saturday and Sunday, but a chance of rain on Memorial Day. The unlocking of the ocean cleared the way for the colorful procession of dozens of business people to take the first dip of the season. Suzanne Muldowney, better known as her flamboyant alter ego “Shelley the South Jersey Shore Mermaid,” helped to direct the crowd into the sea. Unlike the business people clad in workplace attire, Muldowney sported a mermaid costume resplendent in sequins, shells and ruffles, not to mention a fake tail and fins.center_img “We have to wait until Labor Day before we start using terms like ‘blockbuster’ or ‘sold out.’ But this is a good indicator so far for a strong summer season for Ocean City,” Gillian said of the hotel and rental data. “A weekend like this one in Philadelphia, where the temperatures are in the 90s, really brings them down to Ocean City,” Michele Gillian said on the bustling Ninth Street beach, where the ceremonies were held. Mayor Jay Gillian, right, and other Ocean City officials used a large wooden key to ceremonially “unlock” the ocean and beaches for the Memorial Day weekend. Using a large wooden key, city officials and local merchants ceremonially “unlocked” the ocean. The ceremony has been an Ocean City tradition for more than a century. Last year, the city posted record beach tag sales and parking revenue, two crucial metrics underscoring the strength of the summer season. “I’ve always loved coming to Ocean City ever since I was a little girl,” the 63-year-old Muldowney said. “So many other people do, too. It’s so family friendly.”Eric Axelson, a Realtor with Keller Williams, emerged from the chilly surf soaking wet but smiling. He took the plunge while wearing a business suit and dress shoes. Minutes later, he emerged from the still-chilly surf wearing waterlogged clothes and awide smile. They were joined by a few hundred costumed characters, mascots and everyday tourists as they marched into the ocean led by local Realtor John Walton and accompanied by the strains of “Pomp and Circumstance” played by the Ocean City High School Band. Friday’s ceremonies to celebrate the arrival of the 2016 summer season took place under sun-splashed skies and temperatures in the 70s. Ocean City hopes to leverage its recent selection as “Best Beach in America” in an online nationwide poll conducted by Coastal Living Magazine for even more business and publicity. It is also looking to defend its 2015 title as “Top Beach in New Jersey” in another contest. Results of the 2016 state contest will be announced on July 4. “Seeing everyone here is a great sign,” the mayor said.last_img read more

  • The power of the human spirit

first_imgDuring a recent visit to South Africa, I was struck by the legacy and influence of Nelson Mandela on the hearts of South Africans. Beyond his image appearing on buildings and in museums, locals keep his spirit alive in conversation.Imprisoned for 27 years, 18 of those in a cell on Robben Island, Mandela and his fellow inmates referred to the prison as “A Freedom University.” Our tour guide, a former inmate himself, Mr. Sipho Msomi, was imprisoned at the age of 21 for being one of the organizers of a political group to fight apartheid. He shared that Mandela and the inmates recognized that “education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” The tour was a chilling, yet inspiring couple of hours. On the boat ride back to Cape Town I kept thinking about the power in choosing how we react to our circumstances. Nelson Mandela and his fellow prisoners chose to turn their cells into classrooms, the prison into a University of Freedom. They shared information however they could; hidden notes, quiet conversations while doing hard labor at the limestone quarry, and stealing newspapers from the prison guards. Most of us aren’t living in a small cell but sometimes we act like it. Imagine what could be accomplished if we shifted our perception of obstacles to opportunities…From South Africa I went to Kenya to speak at the 20th SACCA (Credit Union) Congress and attended the first ever Women in Co-ops Network Forum in Africa. It was another example of the power of the human spirit. While Africa is a continent that is rising, the gender equity gap is wide. Women still face discrimination in the workplace and are pressing for fundamental rights, from getting an education to having a voice in their government and more.Choosing to be driven, rather than overwhelmed by the challenges, a group of women in our credit union movement in Africa opted to become change agents. Their efforts have ignited a movement that is slowly spreading across the continent, providing opportunities for women to network, find their voice, move into more leadership roles and have a bigger impact in their communities. These change agents recognized a need and created a new path to serve others, without excuses. We all have choices in how we react to circumstances. Sometimes we build our own cells when things don’t go our way. We hunker down and have an ongoing pity party. Maybe we don’t get the job we want, experience workplace changes that we don’t agree with, or think about the million reasons why something is “impossible.”The reality is that dreams, big or small, can be realized. Don’t let a “long” checklist of steps and obstacles hold you back. Start tackling each step. As you take action, you’ll find that the checklist is actually the roadmap to accomplishing your dreams.Take the first step today. As challenges pop up, take a moment to identify at least one opportunity. They exist in every single challenge just waiting to be discovered. Be the agent of change and make 2020 your year of possibilities! 86SHARESShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblr,Julie R Ferguson Founded by Julie R Ferguson in 2009, JRF Consulting concentrates on growth and member engagement. • Bud Light All-Stars returns

first_imgWhilst much has been said about Bud Light and their efforts in esports, the brand remains undeterred and continues to plug away in the space. The brand came under criticism for last year’s “All-Star” campaign as people argued that simply put – the players weren’t all-stars. Credit: Bud LightRegardless, they’ve achieved over 433,000 YouTube hits and 3.6 million minutes of esports competition were watched with Bud Light branding attached – according to Forbes. The All-Stars program is back, with four layers from Call of Duty, CS:GO, Hearthstone and Street Fighter V. Call of Duty players include Scump, Clayster, Crimsix and Jkap, whilst CS:GO includes JDM, SGares, Rush and Shahzam. In Street Fighter JWong and Flash are amongst the names which goes to show the names this year are definitely of higher calibre. Esports fans are invited to vote for their favourite player from any of the game – with the All-Stars roster being announced in late June. The aim with the roster is to produce a documentary-style film on the All-Stars as well as having them stream on Bud Light’s Twitch channel every Thursday, from late June all the way through until December. “We recognised the importance, scope and opportunity in esports, and we recognized the passion that many esports fans have for the players,” Eelco van der Noll, Vice President of Experiential Marketing at Anheuser-Busch told Forbes. “We have a long track record of working with properties of music, sports, all leagues except the NHL and esports is sort of an extension of that.”He continues: “Esports is still relatively new and gives us an opportunity to engage with people we may not otherwise be able to reach. Our ultimate goal of course is to create brand affinity and brand preference so that people look more favourably to our Bud Light brand.”Esports Insider says: Be interesting to see how this goes, there’s some relatively big names listed under each esport now – especially Scump who is a proverbial god in the Call of Duty world.last_img read more
