  • MLB trade rumors: Potential backup plans for Yankees, Dodgers, Astros at the deadline

first_img MLB trade rumors: Mets ‘open to dealing’ closer Edwin Diaz Backup plan: Zack Wheeler, MetsThe same goes for the Astros with Syndergaard and Bauer. Both would fit, they want both and they would probably trade just about anything to get either. But they might not be moved. So Houston will probably go after Wheeler, who is an absolutely perfect fit for the Astros and pitching coach Brent Strom. He is a four-seam fastball up, curveball off it guy with a great four-pitch arsenal. That’s almost exactly what Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole are. The only issue is whether Wheeler will be healthy, so his last start before the trade deadline will be huge. Caleb Smith of the Marlins could also be an under-the-radar guy to watch. MLB trade rumors: Jays’ Marcus Stroman emotional after possible last Toronto start There are only so many players to go around at the MLB trade deadline. And at the same time, it often happens teams many thought were sellers turn into buyers due to good runs leading up to July 31 (see Giants, Cardinals, Indians). So teams have to think on their feet. They have to have a Plan B and even a Plan C. MLB trade rumors: Mets will consider moving Noah Syndergaard, signing Zack Wheeler to extension So who are the contenders looking at for their Plan Bs and Plan Cs in case their top targets don’t pan out? We’ll take a shot at figuring that out as well as pointing out who each team is likely targeting first just in case they are able to land that one game-changer in the market. The records and standings positions below are through Wednesday’s games.  Related News Potential backup plans for Yankees, Dodgers, Astros at the deadlineYankees: 66-35, best record in American League, 10-game lead on Rays in AL EastTop targets: Noah Syndergaard, Mets; Trevor Bauer, IndiansBackup plan: Marcus Stroman, Blue JaysAccording to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman, the Yankees’ top two targets in the market are Noah Syndergaard and Trevor Bauer. He also reports New York would be willing to give up any prospect to get Syndergaard. He said on the “Big Time Baseball” podcast that Syndergaard is the only player Brian Cashman would do that for, but he also tweeted Thursday that the Yankees may be willing to do so for a player with similar potential which we believe Bauer has.He also said is it is unlikely Syndergaard gets traded, and Bauer might not be moved either. So taking that into account, the Yankees are already working on a backup plan and it seems Stroman is the right fit. He’s a groundball pitcher, which fits in Yankee Stadium, is from New York and has expressed an interest in playing there, and he has playoff experience as well as big-game experience in the World Baseball Classic. He may be a backup plan, but he would be a good addition to an already pretty good rotation.Dodgers: 67-37, best record in National League, 14 1/2-game lead on Diamondbacks in NL WestTop targets: Felipe Vazquez, Pirates; Brad Hand, IndiansBackup plan: Will Smith, GiantsThe Dodgers need a man to help bridge the gap between the starters and closer Kenley Jansen and Vazquez and Hand would be just that for them. Both are lefties and good strikeout pitchers and putting them in a setup role should make things a little easier as well. They would be perfect fits, but we don’t think they’ll be moved. That leaves us with Will Smith of the Giants. Again, he’s left-handed and a good strikeout guy and should be a solid bridge to Jansen because of that. All that being said it remains to be seen if the Giants would do business with their arch-rival, so it’s not a done deal that this would happen. However, with Farhan Zaidi now at the helm in San Francisco, it feels like a deal is more likely. Shane Greene of the Tigers would also be a good option.Astros: 66-38, second-best record in AL, 7 1/2-game lead on Athletics in AL WestTop targets: Noah Syndergaard, Mets; Trevor Bauer, Indianslast_img read more
